Honoring Memorial Day

“These fallen heroes represent the character of a nation who has a long history of patriotism and honor – and a nation who has fought many battles to keep our country free.”  By Michael Castle

Observing Memorial Day today!

I honor my high school friends who served and died during the Viet Nam Conflict. This Memorial Day Weekend, again as is my custom. My high school friends included Danny Watkins from Meadowview, Virginia; Michael Charles and Kenneth Delaney from Bristol, Virginia; and Frank Campbell from Chilhowie, Virginia. There were several other schoolmates and friends who served and died.

I also honor Curtis “Duck” Montgomery, a World War II veteran. He was a long time friend who passed away in February 2017 at the age of 101.

Finally, on Memorial Day in 2016, my cousin “Marty” Clark, a non-veteran, suddenly passed away. Marty along with my deceased veteran friends were great folks who are in my thoughts on Memorial Day each year.

We Are All Set…!

The Pathway Project is officially underway. Both Copey students, Matias and Amy Gabriela, and Chaperone Catalina have confirmed flight reservations departing on June 17th.

My reservations are also set for the same time frame. We will officially welcome and greet our guests on June 20th during our Annual Reception. All “Friends” near Abingdon and from “long distance” are encouraged to attend. In June 2023, the long distance travel recognition went to Anne Beaudoin from near Toronto, Canada. Last year, Teresa Edgerton-Scott traveled from Shreveport, Louisiana. Who will be recognized this year?

Official Pathway Project Fundraising Kickoff on May 30th.

Our preliminary funding challenge is being set for $4,500.00 to cover all anticipated expenses to have a successful project this year. Help will be needed to reach this goal.
