The Pathway Project Needs You!

“All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, and hope.”   Winston Churchill

The Official Pathway Project Fundraising Campaign begins today. We have our next two outstanding Copey Learning Center students visiting our country and spending time on our Emory & Henry University (EHU) campus during the week of June 17 and departing on June 24th.  They will be joined by their chaperone, Copey Learning Center Director, Catalina. This will be Catalina’s fourth time escorting Copey students to the United States.

Our students are Matias and Amy. They have attended the center for several years and earned this very special trip to this country as part of their incentive and reward for their academic achievements.

We must raise $4,500.00 to cover all the on ground and air expenses, plus meals and lodging for all three travelers when these services are not provided by EHU. This is the same arrangement we have had in place since the Pathway Project began in 2016.

Your financial support is very important in helping provide these students the same quality experience the prior Copey students enjoyed. To get us started on this campaign, I am personally pledging a donation of $700.00 to the campaign. I hope this pledge will inspire others to support this effort.

We have two important deadlines!

First, we must cover 40% or $1,800.00 prior to the Pathway’s annual reception scheduled on June 20th. The balance must be raised prior to July 15th to cover all final unpaid balances due by the end of July.

The Big Announcement…!

I mentioned in the last Post a surprise announcement was forthcoming. “Friends” are invited to join me at The Lincoln Theater for “The Life of John Broady”, the first public performance on a stage.

As John Broady’s ancestor, I have told his story numerous times over the years. However, I have never appeared as John Broady and publicly shared from his perspective regarding his life experiences as a slave.

This monologue will provide my personal insights into Broady’s thinking, his views, and possible understandings of the unique life and experiences he shared with historical figures such as General William Campbell and Campbell’s wife Elizabeth Henry (Patrick Henry’s sister) who was also known later as Madame Russell.

While portraying my 6th great grandfather, wearing the dress of the period, you will hear thoughts about Broady learning to read, and learning about slavery and freedom. You may even be surprised to learn how Broady became a slave and received his name.

I spent many Saturdays as a kid along with many of my friends watching movies at The Lincoln Theater. This rare opportunity to return to this iconic theater as a performer on stage is a dream come true. Please join me as we travel back 250 years (VA250) when history was being made in our own back yard.
