Life in Southwest Virginia

“Education is the key that will unlock the door to freedom.”  by George Washington Carver

Southwest Virginia..!

My annual trip home is always full of excitement and nostalgia—reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones along the way.

This June, however, looks different. The Copey Learning Center students are not making their annual trip to the USA due to current travel concerns, and the annual “Friends” gathering is canceled. We are hopeful this tradition will return in 2027.

Pura Vida..!

In good news, Emory & Henry University students (Carson and Drea) spent five weeks in Copey supporting the Copey Learning Center and have now returned. Additionally, two professors joined Dr. Gaia when she visited Copey late May.

Dr. Celeste Gaia, the university’s Director of International Education, was joined by Professors Mary Boltwood and Oleski Navarro.

Dr. Gaia provided me a report on her experience in Copey.

Shown: Professor Boltwood, Carson, Drea, and Dr. Gaia.

I am honored to share this full report in a separate Post for all the “Friends” to enjoy.

Please read the separate Post titled “Dr. Celeste Gaia…Visits Copey, Costa Rica.”

This is an “excellent read” that provides further evidence why this project is very special.

I am grateful for the continuous interest and support provided by Emory & Henry University. For ten years this partnership has been “making a difference” in the world.

The Speaking Tour Continues..!

Another reason for being in southwest Virginia is to complete two speaking commitments. Last Saturday I was featured speaker at the 90th Annual Historical Society of Washington County (Virginia) Dinner Meeting. I spoke about John Broddy who lived during the American Revolution and resided in Washington County.

This weekend I will speak again at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia. I share my stories regarding two speeches delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. ; “I Have a Dream” and the “Nobel Prize for Peace” acceptance speech.

There are several additional speeches planned between now and August. These can be viewed at http://www.arthurbroady.com. (upcoming events)

Still Looking for a Volunteer

I am convinced there is a volunteer desiring to go to Costa Rica and spend time in Copey providing a service that amazingly different and challenging. Who and where are you? Volunteer…we need you!

There are more than 100 “Friends” from the east coast to the west coast. On average each of you know three to five potential volunteers. You can post the need on your social media sources, share the news at church, at work, and elsewhere.

You can make a difference! Let’s find the person who is looking for us…and Copey!
