Pathway Project May 13th…Departure
Very soon two of Emory & Henry College’s (E&H) finest will be taking off for Copey, Costa Rica. Camden Jones and Katelyn Siekerka will be on their way to Copey to spend several weeks providing educational support to the Copey Learning Center. The Copey Learning Center students will have an amazing experience when the E&H students arrive.
Both Camden and Katelyn were featured in a recent Post. I shared the link of the interview Monica Hoel conducted during her “Duck Pond Wall” broadcast held on April 16th. If you have not yet listened to this interview, please do now. It is a real “must do” because the interview provides some fascinating moments to cherish. As I recall, as “Friends” we have never heard E&H students publicly speak about their plans to travel to Copey since we started sending E&H students to Copey in 2016. The energy, excitement, and enthusiasm heading off to Copey foretells the mutual experiences our students and the Copey community will have.
Congratulations to Monica. This was not a typical interview for the “Duck Pond Wall” series. She scored big with this interview as she moved skillfully about the conversation and captured the individual motivation each student has for signing up for this journey. And, we hear from both students how positive the Pathway Project is viewed among the E&H students. Please take a few minutes to listen and another minute to send Monica a note congratulating her on a job well done. mshoel@ech.edu
June 10th Departure for Copey Students…
We are now busy planning for the arrival of our Copey students who leave Costa Rica on the morning of June 10th. First stop, Washington, D.C. to experience some of the sites of our nation’s Capitol. By Wednesday, these students along with the chaperone will journey to Emory & Henry College. We are holding our annual welcoming “reception” on Friday, June 14th.
It would be such an honor to have you join us and share in this very special event. We have students traveling a long distance to come to visit us and certainly (God willing) we are traveling a long distance from the northwest to attend as well. This is the “only” time ever “Friends of Copey” come together as a group in one place for a couple hours. More details will be forthcoming.
The 2024 Pathway Project Goal…!
Goal $4,500.00 Current $3,300.00 Need $1,200.00 Deadline June 24, 2024
We have made some progress towards our goal. We still have a distance to go. If you have considered financially supporting the Pathway Project and not done so…this is the best time! All sizes of
donations are welcomed. If you have already donated this year in support of the prior two fundraising campaigns, consider asking a friend or relative to join us. There is always more room for new “Friends.”

Final Comments…
Several “Friends” sent comments regarding my reference to Coach John Wooden in last week’s Post. Seems I am not the only one who admires and appreciates Coach Wooden’s leadership and human qualities. It would have been well for me to also point out that numerous “Friends” have similar qualities. This is evident by the way “Friends” value those students in Copey. We cannot always make a difference when we work alone. However, collectively we can pull together a high level of energy and generate a huge amount of caring support to bring hope to a community…and “Make a Difference!” As Coach Wooden believed,
“if we care about the people, the game will take care of itself. ” And, “Little things make the big things happen.”
