Semana Week…!

“So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.”  By Christopher Reeve

Holy Week..!

This week is “Holy Week” or Semana Santa. One of the relative multitude of astounding and most stunning events within the Catholic tradition and held in Costa Rica. This festival happens yearly the week preceding Easter.

New Changes..!

My last Zoom meeting a week ago was very productive. New information emerged. First, I now have photos of the facility being used for the Copey Learning Center.

The old familiar building with the name Copey Learning Center on the front no longer exists.

Building renovations have completely changed the appearance both inside and outside of the old building. Classes are being held inside the new facility while we continue to provide on-line education using “Dream Team” volunteer teachers.

All in all, this is the slow transition back to normal or 100% in person teaching.

Goodbye Celeste..!

Another significant change includes the departure of Celeste. Celeste has managed the day to day business of the Center all through the pandemic and was successful in helping convert the teaching from in house to on-line teaching over the past two years.

Celeste is moving on to employment in the private sector and we are happy for her continuous development. We, “Friends of Copey”, thank her for taking on a major role when the pandemic caused major disruptions in education.

Celeste’s sister Anyela will take over Celeste’s duties. Anyela is another success story having attended the Copey Learning Center. She was scheduled to be one of the students in 2020 to travel to the United States under the “Pathway Project” when Covid-19 shut down travel in 2020.

See the video with Celeste interviewing her sister Anyela about three years ago.

It is gratifying to see students from the Copey Learning Center develop and move into leadership roles to support the work at the Center.

Anyela…Welcome to this new adventure in your life.

Pathway Project…Still Possible?

We are working with Emory & Henry College (E&H) on possible plans to invite students from Copey to the United States and to E&H College in late June. The plan is for the Copey students to attend summer camp sponsored by the college’s School of Health Sciences. This will have a different educational focus during the term of the camp than the prior “Pathway Project” camps Copey students have attended. This could be very beneficial to the selected Copey students.

More to Come!

  1. Wow! I hope the Copey students can visit Emory in June! Thanks for working on that!
As for Celeste, she will do great thingsd, I am certain – she will be missed at the Copey Center, though!

  2. Congratulations on your new adventures, Celeste. You have been an amazing teacher, mentor, and leader for the Copey Learning Center. We wish you the very best, and we sincerely thank you for all you have done for the students and others at CLC. Anyela, welcome to your new position as you take your sister’s place. To you, we send our very best wishes as you guide the center and the students forward. Congratulations to you as well. I hope to meet you both in person one of these days. Take good care.

  3. Wow! The new building is quite different. Transitions are challenging but how exciting that former students of Copey Learning Center can move into leadership roles. Congratulations to Anyela and her sister, too.
