“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” John 14.3
“Enter…for there is a place prepared for you…!” John 14.3 (summarized)
Last week, a long-time friend fell victim to COVID-19 and his beloved community and others throughout the country are mourning the loss. William (Willie) Fields from southwest Virginia passed away on August 31.
I am among those who feel Willie’s departure is too soon and too sudden. We have known each other for more than 60 years. It has been the past 10 years that we have really grown much closer and to come to know each other’s heart.
His life involved a wide range of talents and accomplishments. His passion for life, for people, for history, for art, and his passion for God touched us all. The more complete story published in his hometown paper is provided in the link at the end.
Almost on a monthly basis, Willie and I exchanged notes. Willie would often say… “tomorrow is not promised to anyone” or “God saw fit to allow me to wake up one more day”.
With every interaction I had with Willie, he would smile and convey with complete certainty his understanding, knowledge, and acceptance of God’s plan and schedule. Willie believed each day was a blessed day. Willie would say, “Brother, one day at a time!”
I informed Willie last month I would be in southwest Virginia later in September and would visit him as usual.
My personal grief is great. But, my joy is greater knowing Willie is now at that place he knew was prepared and was waiting for him. He will be missed.
