Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund

The family of Anne G. Broady has opened the door of opportunity for family and friends to donate funds to support The Copey Learning Center in Copey, Costa Rica. The donated funds will be used for scholarships for children of families unable to afford the $100.00 or $60.00 per year tuition.  The amount of the annual tuition is very low by our USA standards but is unaffordable for many families who reside in the small rural town of Copey.  We are making a short term commitment to provide up to 50 scholarships over a five (5) year period. This commitment will be evaluated annually to determine if scholarship funds will be requested each year.

Background

This scholarship fund is named in honor and memory of Anne G. Broady and intended to recognize the love and compassion she felt for others, especially those who needed help. Anne was born in 1925 in the small town of Marion, Virginia, the 11^th of 13 children. Many of her siblings attended college and enjoyed very successful professional careers. Anne did not attend college but learned to value education.  She inspired others to pursue education beyond high school and made many personal sacrifices to ensure her own children had that opportunity. Anne practiced what she preached. She spent many of her early adult years as a domestic worker. When a new factory opened in her home town, she took the opportunity to improve herself and left the domestic worker ranks. She quickly learned the skills needed and moved up to supervisor within the company. As she would put it, “I had to do it the hard way”. Had Anne attended college, there is no doubt she would have been a huge success in her educational and professional endeavors.

In 1981 she relocated to Washington State from Virginia.  As a widow and a very self-reliant woman, she took on a new career and demonstrated again that hard work and determination pays off.  She believed in meeting life’s challenges head on, to be responsible for self, and help others in need within her means.  As she grew older the number of her friends and associates grew. Those Anne touched became life-long friends and each friend valued the trust, love, and respect she afforded them. During Anne’s short term illness with cancer, she continued to show others how to face life head on by confronting her illness with courage and grace. Many family members and friends stood by her during her illness, witnessed her unbending faith during her difficult days, and mourned her passing on August 27, 2013. There were two memorial services held to allow her friends and family to say goodbye; one memorial service was held in Washington State and one in her home town in Virginia.

Family members wanted to honor Anne’s legacy in a unique fashion and suggested a memorial scholarship fund be set up in her name. The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund would allow family members and friends the opportunity to support a cause she felt strongly about.  The Copey Learning Center was suggested because in the final months of her life she developed a keen interest in this project.  She was very excited to hear the daily progress reports on the project’s development. She enjoyed hearing the news of the accomplishments being made and spent many hours looking at photos taken in the beautiful country of Costa Rica.  Many of these photos will be highlighted in this Blog at a later date.

                      The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund Stipulations

1. The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund will be a collection of donations submitted directly to The Learning Center in Anne’s name. The oversight of the donations will be provided by the Co-Founders and scholarship fund representatives; Arthur T. Broady (son) and Dr. C. Franklin (Lin) Church (close family friend).
2. We do not intend to have funds under our direct control.  No “Friends of Copey” bank account will be established under the name of Anne G. Broady and no donations will be received by anyone other than The Learning Center in Copey.  All donors will be encouraged to use the PayPal payment system set up by The Copey Learning Center. If a donor prefers not to use or cannot use the PayPal payment system, other payment arrangements will be made with the donor on an exception basis between the scholarship fund representatives and the donor.
3. The life of The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund is set for a five (5) year term with a commitment to promote and encourage donations to support a minimum of 10 students per year. There are two scholarship amounts a donor may select. A one year scholarship for kindergarten students is $60.00 and a one year scholarship for non-kindergarten students is $100.00 per student.

The process for donating is very simple. To donate, simply use the link to the Copey Learning Center provided to locate the PayPal button. Click on the button and enter the requested information. Please indicate this donation is made in the name of The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund. You will receive a PayPal confirmation that your donation has processed successfully.  In 30 days or less, you will receive from The Learning Center the name of the student benefitting from your scholarship donation along with the age, nationality, and grade of the student. Periodically, you will receive educational progress reports. The fund representatives will also keep donors informed via the Blog on how things are going.  www.copeylearningcenter.org

The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund will have two scholarship fund representatives and neither will have any legal responsibility. Their role will be to provide oversight of donations and scholarship awards.  They will also track the students, ensure the integrity of the scholarship fund is maintained, and evaluate/determine annually if the scholarship fund effort is to continue.

                 Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund Co-Founders

Arthur (Scrapper) T. Broady, Anne’s surviving son, was born and raised in Marion, Virginia. Attended and graduated from Emory & Henry College, Emory, Virginia.

Arthur served in the US Air Force and enjoyed a successful career as a manager in Human Resources for nearly 20 years mostly in a fortune 500 corporation. His background also includes public school teaching, government contracting, school board President, college board of trustee, and various community service affiliations including Kiwanis and the Shriners.

Although Arthur’s mother Anne had been close to Dr. Church for 70 years, Arthur and Dr. Church never met until Anne’s Memorial Service in Virginia. In honor of Anne, both Arthur and Dr. Church share the role of Co-Founders of The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund.

Dr. C. Franklin (Lin) Church, MD knew Anne when he was a toddler living in Marion, Virginia in the 1940’s. Anne was the house keeper for his family and cared for him along with his brother and sister.  Lin attended Duke University where he received his medical degree.

Lin has spent more than thirty years in both the clinical and administrative fields of medicine. He is a Founding Partner of Raleigh Family Physicians and served as a Senior Vice President and North Carolina Medical Director with MAMSI Health Plans (affiliated with United Healthcare Group Company). He is Chief Medical Officer of IndUShealth (a leading provider of corporate medical travel administration services).  He and his siblings maintained very close ties with Anne throughout her life.
