“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” by John Wesley
Thank You!
In 2025 we conducted the three primary fundraisers. Each are essential to the support we provide to The Copey Learning Center annually. And, we continue to achieve our financial goals in each one in spite of significant challenges. Thank you!
The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund
The Anne G. Broady Scholarship Fund reached its annual goal of $1,800.00. These funds provide educational tuition assistance to
approximately 18 Copey Learning Center students. This may appear to be an insignificant amount of money. However, the community benefits tremendously and the funds go a long way to help enroll students in great need.
The Executive Director Salary Support Fund
The Copey Learning Center’s success depends largely on the center’s ability to have a strong leader managing the day-to-day operation and to ensure the educational goals are being met. The goal for this salary support was set at $2,300.00. The total funds raised was $2,300.00. This required more time and effort than in prior years. We are gratified to have several donors who came to our last-minute rescue.
The Pathway Project Fund
This is our largest financial challenge each year. Our expenses depend on anticipated airfare, hotel, food, ground transportation, and other items.
We initially set our Pathway Project goal at $4,500.00 based on our planning estimates. These funds would cover the travel and living expenses for two students and one chaperone from Copey, Costa Rica to the United States and back home.
Mid-way through the project, updated cost predictions indicated additional funding would be needed. The new goal was $5,500.00. At the completion of the project, a total of $5,700.00 was needed and successfully raised to cover all the Pathway Project expenses.
Going forward, all financial aspects of the Pathway Project will be reviewed to determine how we can continue this very important project. We have successfully conducted the Pathway Project since 2016 and we wish to continue providing Copey students this life-changing experience. However, we will need to determine how best to meet the funding challenges we face.
Other End of Year Information
Saying Goodbye..!
Loss of “Friends” this year included fraternity brother and longtime friend Gene Gabriel who passed away in June 2025. For more than half a century, Gene was as close as a real brother to me. Following his long illness, we had to say goodbye to Gene.
In December, Zina Griffith passed away. Zina, my cousin and life-long friend had only a short illness before she passed away far too soon. After her very long career in public education, she became a significant participant in the Pathway Project. She greeted the Copey students upon their arrival in Washington, D.C. and provided them memorable and informative tours of the city she grew up in. No one knew more about our country’s capital than Zina.
Sustainable Friends..!
I am deeply encouraged and grateful for the ongoing support for the “Friends of Copey” mission. The overall level of interest/support both non-financial and financial
throughout the year remains constant and consistent.
All community-oriented projects wholly dependent on the voluntary support of its supporters face constant challenges and uncertainties. We manage to do very well.
Among the ever-changing number of “Friends” involved year after year, there is certainly a “core” of supporters continuously committed. After twelve years now, I know what sustains our efforts and those involved. My debt to you is enormous.
I am also fully aware that new “Friends” show up and often replace those whose time has come to move on. Departed “Friends” leave with my heartfelt thanks. I am thankful for the support. I thank all the newcomers and hope the stay is long and worth your time and interest.
Countries Watching!
Here is an amazing piece of tracking data to see. This Blog gets a tremendous number of viewers from the strangest locations.
Certainly, the vast majority of the views come from the USA, Costa Rica, and Canada. I know why! However, I have no idea why China, India, United Kingdom, and other countries show up. It has been this way from the very beginning.
Closing…!
The hard-earned funds “Friends” donate to help support The Copey Learning Center continue to be greatly appreciated. I am never forgetful of the generosity and the willingness you demonstrate every year.
I often say, “What we do is unusual…and the way we do it is even more unusual. It is almost like defying gravity.
We work based on the simple belief that when two or more gather and agree, much can be accomplished outside of conventional institutions, agencies, and governments. We are showing a side of America that is not often seen or experienced. Thank you!
