We Honor Those!
This weekend, we pause to honor the men and women who served this country and never made it back home to civilian life. For me, that remembrance has faces and names I have carried for more than fifty years.
Michael Charles. Danny Watkins. Kenny Delaney. Frank Campbell.
We were boys once — teammates, classmates, young men with the world still opening in front of us.
Three died in Viet-Nam. One was killed while home on leave. Their lives ended before they ever had a chance to grow old.
While they were serving, I was attending college. My biggest concerns were getting to class on time, winning the next football game, and finding enough to eat. Their sacrifices stood in stark contrast to the smallness of my own worries.
So on this Memorial Day as I have done many times, I raise up their names. I hold them up as representatives of all we honor today. Young men who once walked beside me… and whose memory I will never let fade.
There were several others I knew in those days who died while serving in the military. Therefore, I hold up these four friends as representatives of all those we remember and honor on this Memorial Day.
In Copey…!
Things are happening in Copey. Emory & Henry University (EHU) currently has two student volunteers in Copey providing support to the Copey Learning Center. Reports indicate Rihana Carson and Drea Agymean are doing well. They have received the typical warm welcome by the Copey community. (Rihana left-Drea right)
And there is more!
Dr. Celeste Gaia has been the driving force behind the Pathway Project since 2016. Because of her leadership, more than 16 EHU students have gone to Copey to provide temporary classroom support. Dr. Gaia is the main reason both Rihan and Drea are serving in Copey today.
Also, Dr. Gaia and fellow professor Dr. Oleski Navarro are on their way to Copey to visit and witness first-hand the Copey Learning Center and the Copey community. God-Speed!
This will the first trip to Copey for both travelers. We look forward to hearing more about their experience in Copey.
Still Need a Volunteer…!
We are still in dire need of a volunteer teacher. The call is out for newly graduates focused on teaching and those who have retired. Both groups are great matches for the educaional work at the Copey Learning Center. You can be helpful. If you know anyone who is seeking an amazing experience, let us know.
