Today I am focused on family and friends but my attention is always connected to the spirit of what makes “Friends of Copey” function as well as it does. This project [Friends of Copey], is a continuous story of good news and people making differences in their lives and the lives of others.

Maliek Broady

This past weekend, I had the honor, benefit, and pleasure to see in person my oldest grandson’s first game for this 2018 Football Season. Maliek is now a senior at the University of Nevada at Reno playing his first game as a linebacker. This past Spring he changed positions from running back to linebacker bringing on a huge challenge for him to learn this new position and be ready to go by game time.

His first time out in this new position…in D-1 Level Football, he performed very well. This speaks volumes about Maliek’s work ethic, motivation, and acumen for football. We are all proud of his successful move from offense to defense. We are also just as proud of his academic accomplishments off the field. “Go Bro…!” 

Jane’s Anniversary

About this time last year, Jane Rutledge arrived in Copey. There has been many proud times and events during the five  plus years working with the Copey Learning Center, but not one as proud as when Jane made it to Copey. Often we hear the term “impact player” in sports. Well, Jane is an “impact player” in the world of education and volunteerism. She understands the meaning of the “heart of a servant” and that “service to humanity…is the best work of life!”  Happy Anniversary Jane!”

Aunt Katherine!

You know we celebrated Aunt Katherine’s 100th birthday last week but did you know what happened at West Virginia State University?

She was present on the campus for the unveiling of a new statue honoring her. This recognition included the establishment of the Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson Scholarship which will benefit students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) fields, with the emphasis on assisting talented individuals who are underrepresented in those fields.
